Your first 5 minutes
In the next five minutes you will install Decree and run your very first command.
A sentence that tells the computer what to do is called a command. A list of commands is a program. Think of it as a note of requests for your computer.
1. Install (1 minute)
Go to the download page and pick your computer (Windows, Mac or Linux). Double-click the file you downloaded, and that's it.
2. Open (1 minute)
Double-click Decree Studio. This is where you write your commands.
| Area | What it is for |
|---|---|
| The big white area on the left | Where you write |
| The right side (or bottom) | Where your computer replies |
| ▶ Run at the top | Ask the computer to carry out your commands |
| ■ Stop at the top | Stop in the middle |
3. Press ▶ (1 minute)
Type this line on the left:
say "Hello"Then press ▶ Run. If you see this on the right, it worked:
Hello
Congratulations! Your computer just obeyed your first command.
4. Change one line (2 minutes)
Change Hello to anything you like and press ▶ again.
say "Good morning!"Now add another line below. Commands run from top to bottom.
say "Good morning!"
say "Have a great day"Good morning! Have a great day
If something goes wrong
- If you see “Stumbled on line …”, that is an error — your computer saying “I didn't understand this part”. Nothing is broken. The message tells you what is wrong and how to fix it.
- The most common mistake is a missing
". Check that every opening"has a closing one.

The full tutorial is in Japanese for now, but every command also has an English form. See the English at a glance table, or open the playground and pick the “英語で書く” (English) sample.
